You used to be able to purchase a dirt cheap cellphone here in Spain or even get a free one but times they are a changin! These days about 70% of Spain owns a cellphone, this is mostly due to the inexpensive calling rates and to the fact that you are NEVER charged for any incoming calls (unlike in the U.S.A, where you pay through the nose for all calls, incoming or outgoing).

 

So, while you could roll into town and spend your time looking to buy a cellphone and comparing the deals and calling plans, I have made it easy for you to rent one and have it delivered to you upon your arrival in Madrid and picked up when you leave. My rentals are ideal for daily, weekly or monthly renting but keep in mind that if you are going to be in Spain for more than 2 months, it is better to just buy one flat out. I can also sell you a phone so if you prefer to buy, drop me an . I have however made my rental prices so low that it is well worth renting instead of buying.

Benefits of my rental service:

After much market reasearch I found that the only way for Americans to rent a cell phone for use in Spain (U.S.A. standard cell phones do not work over here, the operating frequency is different) was through a few huge companies in the U.S. that offer their phones and rates for travel in over 150 countries worldwide. The down side is that they charge very high rates for both in country and international calls (Spain: in country $2/minute and to the U.S.A. $3.50/minute, ouch!). The kicker is that you also have to pay for the phone to be shipped to you in the U.S. prior to your departure and many even charge for the calls you recieve, a practice unheard of in Spain. So, I stock a load of cellular phones so you can rent one and have it delivered to you in Madrid when you arrive and picked up when you leave Spain. The phone will work in Europe & Africa, and Asia Pacific and is lightweight, attractive and fun (includes various built-in games).

My rental service gives you the unlimited use of a  cellular phone. The phone works with a chip from a prepaid card and you ONLY pay for the calls you make (see further down on this page) and you will NEVER be charged for an incoming call.

Please Note:

* All rentals include the delivery of the phone to you in Madrid and pick-up when you leave. This covers only the city of Madrid, if you are outside of the city or at the airport waiting for a transfer flight, there is an added delivery expense of $30 on weekdays and $35 on weekends and holidays (Spanish ones :-)

* All rental plans require a deposit of $150 USD (deposit will be refunded when the phone is returned to me in one piece and functioning perfectly).

Calling Plans & Airtime Rates (what you will be charged for your outgoing calls)

As I previously mentioned, the cell phones in Spain work on digital prepaid chips that can be recharged whenever the credit runs out of reaches a level that is too low to be able to place a call. My phones run on Telefónica Movistar Activa™ prepaid chips that can be easily recredited at any dealer and most ATM machines in Spain. Each phone comes with an initial predetermined calling plan chosen (plan #4 below) but you can change this plan to any of the others below up to 2 times without being charged for the changeover. Once you get your phone, it is wise to change the plan to the one that best suits you.

I will provide you with detailed instructions on how to change calling plans, recharge the credit, check your remaining credit, etc... when I deliver your phone to you in Madrid.

* Keep in mind that call traffic is calculated and billed every 30 seconds after the first complete minute. The connection fee for all calls within Spain is 20 Pesetas/call (0,12 €).

The mobiles I rent (just like all mobiles) can send and recieve SMS text messages.

Message prices:

 

1) Reception: absolutely free ! You will never be charged for a message that you recieve on your mobile phone.

 

2) Sending: 

a) Messages to any other Spanish mobile phone using the "MoviStar Messaging Center" (+34 609 09 09 09) cost 25 Pesetas/message (0,15€).

b) If you send a text message without using the  "MoviStar Messaging Center" (+34 609 09 09 09), it will cost Pesetas/message (0,6€).

So, as you can see, while most U.S. rental companies charge you $3.50 per minute to call the U.S.A, my service only charges 150 Pesetas or .76 cents !   It's a no brainer, keeping safe and in touch is almost as important as your "café con leche", so,  if you want to rent a mobile phone in Spain, the best way is to do it through me. If you do searches online (in Google.com for example) with the words cell "phone rentals in Spain", you will see exactly what I mean. The U.S. companies that rent are a big "estafa" ("rip off").

- Damaging of the cell phone you rent can result in the partial or full loss of your $200 deposit. Structural damage can cause yuo to lose part (how much depends on the extent of the damage) and damage to the functionality of the phone can result in the full loss of the deposit. Pleeeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeee take care of the phone as if it were your own.

- Any and all prepaid rental fees paid via my PayPal secure server are refundable if and only if the rental is canceled at least 5 business days (Mon-Fri) prior to the scheduled phone delivery date.
